Why Service Entrepreneurs Face Challenges Growing their business
Service entrepreneurs are incredible people, highly skilled at their craft, and passionate about serving people yet still have challenges with business growth. If you are a service provider growing your business part or full time, you have probably run in to a few obstacles along the way in growing your client base. In my opinion, service providers are some of the most incredibly talented, passionate, and committed people you will ever meet; they are also dedicated to delivering an amazing experience to every customer. So why do so many service entrepreneurs have trouble building a sustainable, profitable business?
First off, I am a service entrepreneur myself and have coached many service based business owners in growing their business. Want to know what the common thread of strength is for us? We love doing our craft and would live blissfully happy ever after serving our customers doing what we do best. Truly, if we had a steady stream of clients or customers handed to us weekly and monthly, would that not be fantastic!? Our strength is in delivering our talent in the service we are trained in. Here’s where the curve ball comes in, the second you launch your business doing what you are great at, you instantly get promoted to the position of business owner above service provider.
Service Based Entrepreneurs Meets Business Owner
So there you stand just wanting to do what you do best and all of a sudden you have to become a business builder. Did we get training on how to run a business? Being a business owner pretty much means you are the marketing department, chief financial operator, human resources department, sales team, and social media manager. I just learned about the funny initials entrepreneurs can put after their name, F.E.P, which stand for what I can’t fully write here: f—— everything person. Now a lot of service entrepreneurs jump into doing all of these roles, but the reason many of us are challenged in growing our business is for the following three reasons:
- We don’t know what to do and the formula for business growth
- We are uncomfortable and challenged in marketing and sales promoting our own business
- We have no idea how much or how consistent our business building actions need to be
Take me for example, I really excel with training and coaching clients one on one or perhaps I could say that is where I am most comfortable. Stepping in front of the camera to create videos for YouTube and Facebook Live is definitely not a natural talent and way out of my comfort level; however, it is an absolute must if I truly want to serve and reach more people.

Just the other day, I had a global award winning service entrepreneur say to me, “If someone could just tell me exactly what I need to do and create my schedule for me, that would be terrific.” There absolutely is a formula and business model for service entrepreneurs to grow their business. I see a lot of business owners relying solely on social media, search engine optimization, or word of mouth referrals. Don’t get me wrong, these are great methods to build your business, but there is a multi faceted approach you need to take to acquire ongoing growth results. In today’s market, business growth comes from exposure, adding value, engaging customers, educating your followers, and entertaining them. One of the key pieces to growth is being prolific and consistent.

It really hit me over the last month as I have been coaching service entrepreneurs struggling to grow their business and make the sales targets required to be sustainable. What every single business owner needed from me was marketing ideas, a marketing plan, diversification within their marketing campaign, and a marketing schedule.
